The abacus is used by many people who are blind or visually impaired. It is used to perform mathematical functions such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division; including decimal numbers. It can be used for square and cubed root problems.  Large multiplication and long division problems can be long and difficult. The abacus gives blind and visually impaired students a tool to compute mathematical problems at speeds and with accuracy that equal that of their sighted peers who use pencil and paper. Students have benefited from abacus because it can be used for skills that can never be replaced with talking calculators and is an important learning tool.
